Why the Christian God?

Jesus claimed to be the only way to God, the source of all truth, and the giver of life itself. This article examines why Christianity's view of God stands uniquely apart from other world religions, using logical arguments and scriptural evidence.

Jesus said, “I am the way, the Truth, and the life. Nobody comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). This statement is profoundly controversial because it makes three bold claims:

  1. Jesus is the only way to God, the sole means of obtaining eternal life (John 10:9).

  2. He is Truth itself — perfect, absolute, and without deviation.

  3. He is the Life — the source of all existence, the Creator.

These claims are controversial for two main reasons:

  • Jesus asserts that the only true God is the God of Judaism.

  • Jesus claims that He Himself is God in the flesh.

Christianity vs. Other Religions

Christianity stands apart from other world religions because its foundational beliefs directly contradict them. Here’s a brief look at how Christianity differs from three of the world’s largest religions:

Islam

  • Allah is not a Trinity (Qur’an 4:171; 5:73; 5:116).

  • Allah is a Father to no one (Qur’an 5:18; 19:88-93; 21:26).

  • Jesus was not crucified (Qur’an 4:157-158).

  • Salvation is achieved through submission to Allah and good works.

Hinduism

  • Believes in 33 million gods, with conflicting sects and contradictory doctrines.

  • The Vedas suggest that gods came after creation.

  • Adheres to the concept of reincarnation, a perpetual cycle of birth, death, and rebirth.

Buddhism

  • An offshoot of Hinduism with no belief in God.

  • Asserts that the universe is eternal, without beginning or end.

  • Teaches that suffering continues until one achieves Nirvana through self-discipline.

These religions contradict one another, and therefore cannot all be true. According to the law of non-contradiction, only one of them can be true.

Why Believe in the God of Christianity?

The Argument from Motion (Thomas Aquinas)

  1. Whatever moves (changes) is moved by something else.

  2. This chain of movement cannot continue infinitely; it must have a first cause.

  3. Therefore, there is an initial cause — an Unmoved Mover.

The Kalām Cosmological Argument

  1. Whatever begins to exist has a cause.

  2. The universe began to exist.

  3. Therefore, the universe has a cause.

This cause must be:

  • Eternal, because it is outside time.

  • Non-material, because it caused the material universe.

  • Infinite, because it is not bound by space.

  • Personal, because it chose to create.

The Nature of the Christian God

This first cause aligns perfectly with the God of the Bible, who is:

  • Eternal: "I am who I am" (Exodus 3:14).

  • Non-material: "God is spirit" (John 4:24).

  • Personal: "In the beginning, God created" (Genesis 1:1).

  • Rational and intelligent: "Great is our Lord... His understanding is infinite" (Psalm 147:5).

  • Perfectly ordered: "For God is not a God of disorder but of peace" (1 Corinthians 14:33).

Jesus Christ – The Revelation of God

Jesus Christ uniquely fulfills the prophecies of the Old Testament, claims to be God in the flesh, and confirms His divinity through His resurrection. His teachings, miracles, death, and resurrection are not only historical but reveal the nature of God to humanity.

Conclusion

Christianity is not merely one religion among many, but the revelation of God Himself. The Christian God is not just a higher being, but the eternal, unchanging source of all truth, life, and existence. This is why the Christian God stands alone among the gods of the world.
